Psychiatry
Psychiatry is a medical science, a branch of medicine dealing with prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses. The term comes from the Greek words "psyche" - spirit, soul and "iatreea" - to heal, so we could say that psychiatrists are "healers of soul". Over the past few decades, psychiatry has developed rapidly, in investigations of neurobiological substrate as well as pharmacology. Modern classifications (ICD-10 and DSM-IV) provide standardized criteria for diagnosis in order to facilitate communication between experts. A large number of drugs are now available for psychiatric disorders.
Along with pharmacological treatments, the biological and especially psychological treatments, as psychotherapy, have been proven their efficacy. The importance of psychiatry is not only to diagnose and treat mental disorders, but also to prevent their occurrence, thus contributing to mental health of the population.
