Psychoanalysis is that part of psychotherapy which tries to solve mental problems by revealing subconscious associations. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), a neurologist from Austria, was the founder of the theory and practice of this method, he published his first book in 1895-whit Breuer-entitled „Studies on Hysteria”. Although at the beginning they applied short therapie, it became more and more longer, until Freud shortend it with a patient, finishing it. Starting with the 1920’s there have been made severel attempts in this direction. These attempts put down the basis of the short analytic therapy.

Unlike classical analysis, which lasts several years (10-20), the short therapy has a duration of 10-40 sessions. Strict rules are being applied referring to time (the length of a session, time between two consecutive sessions), enviroment (the place selected has to respect some minimal requirements: to be neutral, quiet) and referring to the therapeutic relationship. Because of this reason, a therapy contract is being elaborated which offers safety even from the beginning of the therapy, developing a psychological relationship as well. The therapy as a part of the short analytic therapy is focused. This means that related to a patient, focuses only on some associations, selects, even when the patient has more complaints, problems. The focus is being made at the beginning of the therapy.

As a definition, we can say that the short psychoanalyitic therapy is a professional relationship which does not result from an another therapy, does not turn into another therapy, and in a safe and secure enviroment leads to a focused therapeutic change.
